The NEAT Trick
You’ve been eating clean, exercising regularly, and seeing steady results, until suddenly, the scale stops moving.
Think you need grueling gym sessions to lose weight? Think again. The secret weapon for sustainable fat loss might already be part of your daily routine, and it’s called NEAT.
As your dedicated online fitness coach, I am diving into this powerful concept and how to make it work for you.
What Is NEAT?
NEAT stands for Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis, which refers to all the calories you burn from activities that aren’t traditional exercise. That means walking around the house, fidgeting, cleaning, doing errands, gardening, and even standing up more often.
These small, seemingly insignificant movements can make a massive difference in your daily energy expenditure and ultimately in your weight loss efforts.
Why NEAT Matters More Than You Think
While structured workouts (like gym sessions or virtual training) are important, they only account for a small portion of your total calorie burn. NEAT, on the other hand, can account for up to 15–30% of your daily energy output, especially when you build it into your routine consistently.
With Virtual Personal Trainer and my lifestyle-based strategies, you can easily increase your NEAT without overhauling your schedule.
Simple Ways to Boost NEAT Every Day
Here are practical, coach-approved tips to increase NEAT and lose weight naturally:
- Go upstairs: If you live on a high floor, use the stairs rather than the elevator.
- Move More at Home: Clean your space with intention, sweeping, vacuuming, and organizing all burn calories.
- Walk Whenever Possible: Park farther away. Take the stairs. Do walking calls or meetings. Little walks throughout the day add up.
- Set a Movement: Timer Set a reminder every 30–60 minutes to stand, stretch, or do a quick lap around the room. This breaks sedentary habits.
- Swap Your Seat: Try a standing desk, stability ball, or take calls while pacing. These micro-adjustments keep your body more active.
- Turn Tasks into Games: Challenge yourself to beat your previous time while folding laundry or tidying up, make movement more fun.
- Reduce your daily calorie intake: By adjusting your calorie intake daily, you can imitate workouts. For example, reducing your calorie intake by 250 kcal/day will help you lose 250 g (half a pound) per week, equivalent to 30 minutes of daily regular workout.
